Over the past week, I've been writing my creative nonfiction essay for my English Composition 1 course, so for this post, I am going to explain the writing process I am using to write my essay. I've learned this process from a reading we did earlier called "6 Ways To Be A Hemingway-Level Productive Badass".
Step 1: "He knew that standing desks were awesome"
Walking around gets your creative juices flowing. When I was stuck on what to write my essay about, I got up and walked around until I thought of something to write about and it actually really helped.
Step 2: "He began unmediated"
Don't just sit there and think, write! If you don't have any clue what to write, just get ideas down on paper. Even if it doesn't make sense, you can always edit it later. I wrote my whole rough draft down before I even looked back and edited it.
Step 3: "He quantified his process"
Keep track of how much you write per day. If your supposed to write a thousand word essay and you want to split it between 5 days, make sure you write 200 words per day. Or if you have to write a 4 page essay, wrote 1 page per day for 4 days.
Step 4: "He attacked the early hours"
Start writing early so you can either get your work done early, or so you can get even more work done. I got up at 8:00 in the morning to write this essay. 8:00 is early for me when I don't have school, work, or anywhere else to be.
Step 5: "He protected his time"
Don't waste your time with distractions. Stay focused on the task at hand or you'll never get it done. I started writing and didn't stop until my rough draft was finished!
Step 6: "He paid attention"
Pay attention to what you're doing and if you find yourself losing focus because you can't find more to write, observe the things around you that can give you ideas of what to write in your essay. When I got stuck, I started looking at pictures I took from the day I was writing about to give me more ideas on what to write.
